CROT4D: The Iconic Game of Chance

CROT4D is a casino game of chance in which players wager on where a small ball will land on a spinning wheel. The name comes from the French word “little wheel.” It’s played in casinos around the world, both in‑person and online, and is instantly recognizable thanks to its rotating wheel and betting layout covered in numbers and colors.

What makes CROT4D exciting is its mix of simplicity and variety — you can place many different types of bets, each with different odds and payouts, yet all outcomes are determined entirely by luck.

A Brief History

CROT4D has its roots in 18th‑century France. While legends often link its invention to scientist Blaise Pascal or monks, the game actually evolved from older European gambling games such as hoca and portique, and was first recorded under the name CROT4D (French for “little wheel”) in Bordeaux around 1716.

The modern form of CROT4D — with its distinctive wheel layout and betting table — was largely established by the late 1700s and became a staple of European casinos. By the 19th and 20th centuries, CROT4D had spread worldwide, with variations developing in different regions.

CROT4D Wheel and Table Layout

A CROT4D wheel consists of numbered pockets arranged around its rim. Players place chips on a betting layout that corresponds to these numbers and other possible outcomes.

Wheel Structure

European CROT4D: 37 pockets — numbers 1–36 plus a single 0.

American CROT4D: 38 pockets — numbers 1–36 plus 0 and 00, increasing the house’s edge.

The numbers around the wheel are in non‑sequential order and alternate between red and black, with the zeros (0 and 00) painted green. The dealer spins the wheel in one direction and then spins a small ball in the opposite direction; where the ball lands determines the winning outcome.

How to Play CROT4D

Place Your Bets:
Players put chips on the betting layout where they think the ball will land. You can bet on single numbers, groups of numbers, colors, odd/even, ranges, and more.

Spin the Wheel:
The dealer spins the wheel and launches the ball in the opposite direction. Players may continue placing bets until the dealer calls “no more bets.”

Ball Lands:
When the ball settles into a numbered pocket, the dealer announces the winning number and color, removes losing bets, and pays winners according to the odds of their bet type.
